Melbourne cup 2012:The race that stops Australia

Today’s Melbourne Cup is expected to increase the popularity of mobile betting that is presenting betting agencies with new challenges. According to an insider at Sportsbet who happens to be my friend, their company is now processing more than 10 percent of bets from mobile devices. Next year, they expect racegoers will be able to tap into wi-fi being provided as part of a deal struck between the Victoria Race Club and Cisco. The service will allow visitors to place bets, purchase food and drinks and watch the race in high definition video on their mobile devices. Cisco said the service would also help overcome the mobile network overload issues that often plague big race meetings, freeing up the network for texts and voice calls. Punters are expected to take their mobile phones in droves to bet on Melbourne cup, suggesting bookies are set for a bumper race. Most companies in Australia have driven the companies expansion in mobile and internet gambling.

The figures suggest that even in the midst of a recession, a punt on the horses remains a simple pleasure that many refuse to forgo and am one of them. I grew up attending Melbourne cup races and until three years I never missed a single one of them since 1985.Mobile revenues on sports are up 90% in this year according to Industry data released recently and the revenue in the shops is up a more sedate 9%. This will be the first Melbourne Cup where people can bet by phone from their sofa sets. It is a great occasion and it will be good for everyone who loves Melbourne premier horse racing event. Experienced gamblers might note that patriotically betting on their favorite teams to go all the way, or even to win the cup, might be a losing strategy. Am delighted that the government is considering liberalizing gambling legislation in order to maximize tax revenue and increase employment opportunities. All in all am looking forward to a wonderful race that I will catch live on Tv although I’d have preferred to be at the racecourse. Happy Mebourne cup day to fellow Victorians and next year I wont miss this race that defined my childhood addiction to horse racing.
