Kendrick Lamar has made history as the first person of colour to win Triple J’s Hottest 100 in history.Lamar won this year’s Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown with his hit single Humble unlike two years ago, when his track King Kunta was pipped to the post by The Rubens’ song Hoops. The Triple J Hottest 100 countdown released top 100 songs for 2017 and as I followed the list from Snakehips & Mo’s Don’t Leave at the bottom to Kendrick Lamar’s Humble at the top, I was among millions of fans who were eager to see who will succeed Flume that took out the number one spot with Never Be Like You last year. Triple J tallied a record 2.38 million votes and the West Coast American rapper became the first black man to win the coveted title and also first solo rapper to achieve that fete.Lamar’s Humble is the second hip-hop song to take out the number one spot, after Thrift Shop by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis six years ago.

Triple J Hottest 100

However, Gang of Youths were the most dominant in this year’s countdown, with four songs in the Hottest 100 and three of them in the top 10. Aussie artists featured heavily in this year’s countdown, with a staggering 65 Australian songs among the line-up, which is less one than last year.Aussie music industry’s huge potential was that the range of public taste and Australians listen to a vast variety of music and although music streaming services were within reach, fans still also enjoyed live music as much as the musicians enjoyed performing. Most of the Australian artists who are on the list perform live. The iconic Australian music event sparked divided public opinion after it was moved from Australia Day to January 27 because it didn’t want to be part of the Australia Day date change debate, according to Triple J, around 130,000 more votes were cast in this year’s countdown compared to last year proving the new time slot hasn’t impacted it, now Cory Bernadi can go hang himself!
