Green Moon wins Melbourne Cup 2012

The race that brings the whole nation together and most of the time to a standstill has finally ended half an hour ago.I did not attend but watching the events live on Tv was equally satisfying.I loved every bit of it.Victory for the locally trained stallion has reinforced the future of Australian stayers after Lloyd Williams imported the 2012 Melbourne Cup winner 12 months ago from England. The winner of 152nd running of the Melbourne Cup is trained in Australia by Robert Hickmott and ridden by Brett Prebble. The winner triumphed from Fiorente and Jakkalberry. Prebble masterminded a wonderful race on Green Moon, positioning him on the fence in eighth place for most of the race.I knew he will win he gained runs through the field and burst to the front with 250m to go in commanding style and it was the 35-year-old Prebble’s 10th ride in the Cup.It was Lloyd’s Williams’ fourth Melbourne Cup win as an owner. His other Melbourne Cup winners have been Just A Dash in 1981, What A Nuisance in 1985 when I first attended the Melbourne Cup as a young boy and Efficient in 2007.

Green Moon is trained by Williams’ private trainer Robert Hickmott and is one of several international horses which Williams has bought over the last few years in his attempt to win another Cup.It is a boost for Australian horse ownership, Australian Lloyd Williams aged 72, has joined the elite group of owners to have won four Melbourne Cups.Green Moon’s victory has come at a time when local owners have voiced their concerns about international horses raiding Australian prize money. I also think today’s result was not welcome news for bookmakers, with Green Moon $21 defeating the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente $31 by a length, with Jakkalberry $81 a length and a quarter away third. The trifecta paid almost $46,000.The favourites were never in contention. Dunaden, who started at $7, finished 14th. Americian, who started at $7.50, finished 11th. Mount Athos $7.50 was one of few horses to make any ground running on strongly to finish fifth.
