Eagles band website has in the last hour announced that guitarist and founder of US rock band, Glenn Frey, has died, aged 67.Frey died in New York City following complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia, the band said. A statement from his family and band members Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit and Bernie Leadon and manager Irving Azoff, said: ‘It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday, 18 January, 2016.’Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.’The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery.’Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community and millions of fans worldwide.’ The announcement was followed by the lyrics of the band’s song It’s Your World Now, which Frey wrote with Jack Tempchin and has the lyric ‘It’s your world now. My race is run. I’m moving on.’Eagles band member Don Henley said;“We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. I’m not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some.” According to data available, Eagles are one of the best-selling of all time, having sold an estimated 150 million records. Eagles were founded after Frey and drummer Henley left Linda Ronstadt’s backing band to join guitarist Leadon and bassist Randy Meisner.

The Eagles album, “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975,” is the second-best-selling record of all time in the United States. The band’s blend of rock with country music influenced their success with hit songs such as “Desperado,” “Already Gone” and “Take It to the Limit.” Eagles signed for David Geffen’s Asylum Records where they scored average success with their first three studio albums but it was One of These Nights, Hotel California and The Long Run which went multiple platinum in many countries globally. The band’s The Hotel California album alone is projected to have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.Hit track Hotel California’s lyrics have been widely interpreted as an allegory about the dark side of the American dream and the dangers of hedonism in the rock and roll world.Among the songs he wrote the lyrics for was Hotel California, a US number one and ranked as one of Rolling Stone magazine’s top 50 songs of all time. With the country-tinged soft rock giants the Eagles, the musician, also played piano, keyboards and sang lead vocals on many Eagles tracks.Their four-year, 161-date ‘Long Road Out of Eden‘ world tour, which earned an estimated US$250 million, is considered as one of the most successful tours of all-time.Glenn Frey has writing credits on seven of the album’s nine tracks, including Life In The Fast Lane.Frey won six Grammy awards with the Eagles, playing guitar, piano and providing vocals on several classic Eagles songs including Tequila Sunrise, Lyin’ Eyes, Heartache Tonight and Take it Easy. After the Eagles split in 1980, Frey had a successful solo career, recording the songs “The One You Love” and “The Heat Is On.” Several of his compositions were for films or TV shows, and Frey took on a side career as an actor, including a small part in 1996 film “Jerry Maguire.” In 1994, the Eagles reunited and released an album titled “Hell Freezes Over.” The name jokingly referred to Henley’s previous statement that the band would only get back together when “hell freezes over.” Henley said he viewed Frey as a kind of brother, but acknowledged that, like in many families, “there was some dysfunction” in the relationship.

The Eagles, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and have played many sold-out shows since their reunion, most recently completed a two-year tour last July. It was in 2015 when Frey’s health took a bad turn, as he suffered from intestinal problems. Frey is survived by his wife, Cindy, and their three children.Tributes to Glenn Frey have been coming thick and fast since his death was announced with Paul Stanley of KISS on Twitter – “SHOCKED to report the death of GLENN FREY. I’m a better person, better musician and a better songwriter having met him. I still can’t believe he is gone!”.Indeed, the world is again united in mourning another loss to the music industry – RIP Glenn Frey!
