Demystifying Porn addiction

July 2, 2016

Experts define “porn addiction”, a subset of sex addiction, as a wide range of behaviours that are done in excess and negatively impact one’s life.Few days ago, I met someone who claims to understand the myths regarding what constitutes porn addiction and that he believes those suffering from such are folks who need help.He argued that, like smoking problems, porn addiction is an illness that affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide. According to his theory, once an individual is trapped, the consumer of porn will hit rock bottom with no recourse but to aim for abstinence and engage in treatment programs otherwise his or her life will be ruined. As conversation got interesting, he revealed to me that some porn addicts have learned how to simply substitute some prominent signs like those of severe drug and amber fluid dependence like say the way alcoholics have an alcoholic drink first thing in the morning, engaging in drinking despite knowledge of harmful consequences and thats the same thing that happens to porn addiction. In western countries, porn addicts have even opened offices and go on lecture would be porn addicts armed with powerpoint presentations. However, there are plenty of anecdotal stories given to support the notion of porn addiction of how someone’s life spiralled out of control due to love for the women’s genitals.Advocates from the porn industry, as one would expect, generally deny any negative consequence of excessive viewing. It is very important we take a balanced view, supported by good evidence, rather than making assumptions. For porn, there are several contributing factors namely the availability, anonymity, and affordability. Gone are the days when we were young, one had to go to a shop, pay for the merchandise, and come out with brown paper bag full of blue films.Nowadays anyone can now download anything onto their smartphone, PC, laptop, iPad or any internet enabled devices.

Anyone can do this in their bedroom, their car, their office or even public places thanks to super-speed wireless broadband which is now common place.Although I have been criticised before by friends for posting and sharing images they felt were too much for this site, let’s face it, porn is here to stay. Not even trying to ban it will work and one only need to look what happened to prohibition in western countries. Moral crusades and scaremongering will hardly leave a dent but instead will see the uptake go up in the sky. There is no doubt that for some people, excessive viewing of porn can lead to a series of negative consequences. And yes, for some, viewing certain themes may lead them to act out their fantasies and land them in trouble with the law. But not all viewers get hooked on porn to the extent that their viewing becomes detrimental to themselves and impacts others. In my view, engaging in any excessive behaviour is a learned habit and can be unlearned. In other words, all bad habits can sometimes cause us grief, but we can change them. Based on my chinwags with bluds, males and females view pornographic materials on the internet regularly although for us blokes it higher in terms of percentages.Even those married or in de facto relationships like watching the fantasies online. Am not a saint and do watch the stuff once in a while to unwind and i recall I was first introduced to porn at the ages of 11 years by a school mate whose parents were wealthy and could afford ‘brown packo’ as we used to call it back in the days. Parents often ask what signs might be indicative of someone experiencing a problem with porn addiction but that to me I believe depends on an individual. However, the expert told me that all porn addicts have several things in common. These include spending more and more time in the internet, getting defensive when questioned, absconding for long periods of time with internet enabled devices, marked reduction in other activities, being reasonably secretive about spending habits, sleep issue, skipping classes, low mood, social isolation, looking jaded and in extreme cases skipping meals can all point to this.
