“Angry Birds’ creator profits soar
Rovio, the makers of the hugely popular mobile game Angry Birds, announced last night a 57-percent rise in net profit for 2012.Those sales were boosted by consumer product sales. Last year was another record-breaking year for the company according to a statement released by Rovio chief financial officer Herkko Soininen. Rovio net profit rose to 55.5 million euros up from previous year of 35.4 million. The sales more than doubled to 152.2 million euros while growth was driven by games revenue and consumer product sales, which more than tripled in 2012 and accounted for 45% of Rovio’s overall sales. Last year in December, Rovio had a total of 263 million active monthly game users. It was also the year the company launched four games bringing the total number of Rovio game downloads to more than 1.7 billion.
Looking back at early 2011 when I visited their offices, I can say Rovio has grown from a Finnish phenomenon to a very successful business worldwide. In 2010 we set out to build an entertainment company and after last year’s performance we are on a strong path to achieve our goal,” chief executive Mikael Hed said last night. Rovio announced in October that it would be opening its first “Angry Birds” theme park in Asia, near Shanghai this year. It will be the third such theme park, behind those in Finland and Britain. Also in December last year, Rovio said it was making an animated 3D film based on “Angry Birds” that would hit cinemas in 2016. For those who don’t know, “Angry Birds” game involves using slingshots to launch little birds at fortresses built by green pigs.It is a very addictive game that has quickly become the most successful mobile game in history. The game has also spawned an entire franchise of merchandise and tie-ins in media. For the record, am addict of Angry Birds game!
