Alice Glass accuses Ethan Kath of sexual assault
The former lead singer of Crystal Castles, Alice Glass, has accused her former bandmate Ethan Kath of years of sexual assault and abuse that started when she was aged 15. As concerns over persisting violence against women are reemerging in music and film industry, Alice Glass has joined the fray to demand an end to sexual assaults. There is clear evidence that each year millions of women in the world are subject to sexual violence with majority of those being rape. Glass writes that “I met Ethan Kath when I was in the 10th grade. The first time he took advantage of me was when I was around 15.” “I came to in the back of his car extremely intoxicated from drinks he had given me that night.” After that, the pair didn’t communicate for months after that encounter but Kath tracked her down and they eventually reconnected. The sexual assault tragedy that took place has sparked massive attention and concern among both rock fans and activists if anything being tweeted about this claims is anything to go by. Since the assault was announced, it made headlines all over the Twitter. But there is a lot more to this case than the mere criminal act of alleged sexual assault of a young gal. Some online media outlets wrote about a so-called emergency situation created by sex pests in the music industry which shows that this tragic Alice Glass case has been used effectively to expose an already-marginalized group love rats thanks to Harvey Weinstein.Glass says “Claudio was very manipulative towards me. He figured out my insecurities and exploited them: he used the things he learned about me against me,” she wrote.“Over a period of many months, he gave me drugs and alcohol and had sex with me in an abandoned room at an apartment he managed. It wasn’t always consensual and he remained sober whenever we were together.” When looking at this case we should not ignore issues of social hierarchy and the wide economic gap between the alleged perpetrator Ethan Kath and the organization Alice Glass worked for. This is another crucial factor in determining how this particular case is has been handled by the industry, the public and the media. The abuse highlighted by Glass wasn’t only sexual, she also claimed Kath diminished her role in one of the duo’s biggest hits ‘Alice Practice’. “He called our first single ‘Alice Practice’ and said my vocals were a mic test. He concocted that story and told press it was an ‘accidental’ recording, intentionally diminishing my role in its creation. It was another way of putting me down and preying on my insecurities,” Glass wrote.
Glass courage to speak about what she said was the indecent behavior and torturous ordeal should be applauded. The revelations are shocking but not surprising, as many survivors like Glass do not report assaults, and downplay their own experiences as non-serious due to shock, disbelief, and the impacts of trauma. Glass said Kath convinced her to drop out of school when she was just two credits shy of graduating and quickly took control of all aspects of her life. “I wasn’t allowed to have my own phone or my own credit card, he decided who my friends were, read through my private emails, restricted my access to social media, regulated everything I ate,” Glass wrote.“He berated me and yelled at me, telling me that I was a joke, that all the people that came to our shows were only interested in his instrumentals and that I was ruining the band. He broke glass shower doors to frighten me, he locked me into rooms. He told me that my feminism made me a target for rapists and only he could protect me. He forced me to have sex with him or, he said, I wouldn’t be allowed to be in the band anymore.” There is no doubt sexual assault survivors often go into denial and so will minimize their experience and unlike Alice Glass, they might tell themselves, maybe it’s not that bad, maybe it’s all in my head but suck kind of self-blame and denial is a function of trauma. The only message Glass statement is sending out to the public is that an adult should not be allowed to abuse a child, regardless of what benefits that child is getting. No argument that Kath pedophilic acts should be seen as sexual acts performed by an adult on a child. Thus, a pedophile like him should face justice.Every day on Twitter there are many cases of rape and sexual abuse. However, rarely do these cases get anywhere near the amount of media attention the Alice Glass case has or alleged Harvey Weinstein scandal that has rocked Hollywood for the last month or so.Entertainment industry for a long time has been hiding behind norms and values that they believed could save it and its women from sexual violence and sexually transmitted infections like was the case with Charlie Sheen sometimes back. The rock music industry has a very proud of the traditions that most think can protect their own freedom and personal liberation in the face of their own deprivations.Only hope is that all sexual abuse cases being exposed online, if not prevented, will at least be seen for what they are, and tackled, regardless of the social status of the victim, by a law enforcement system that knows the difference between sex pests like Harvey Weinstein and pedophilia like Ethan Kath.
