It was on the wee hours of the morning when I had to wake up and catch up with qualifying session for the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. First, i took time to understand the new platform for new F1 qualifying rules. The radical changes to the qualifying format for the 2016 world championship were first tested today. It was clear the three phase format remains but has an additional extra eliminations that saw the slowest cars cut from qualifying progressively throughout each phase. Only eight cars made it to the final shootout in Q3, down from the 10.I was curious to see qualifying 1 known as Q1 take 16 minutes where all 22 cars started the session. After 7 minutes, the slowest driver was eliminated and he headed to the pits. The next slowest driver was eliminated every 90 seconds until the chequered flag waved. After the chequered flag waved, all cars that were in action finished their laps and the slowest car was then eliminated. Then from what I followed, the 15 fastest progress to qualifying 2 known as Q2 which took 15 minutes. The 15 cars started the session and after six minutes, the slowest driver was eliminated and headed to the pits. After that, the next slowest driver was eliminated every 90 seconds until the chequered flag waved. After the chequered flag waved, all cars still racing were able to finish their laps and the slowest car was eliminated. Then the remaining 8 cars progressed to qualifying 3 known as Q3 which took 14 minutes. The 8 cars started the Q3 round and after five minutes, the slowest driver was eliminated and headed to the pits.Just like Q1 and Q2 the next slowest driver was eliminated every 90 seconds until the chequered flag waved. After the chequered flag waves, cars still racing finished their laps and the fastest driver qualified on pole position which was Lewis Hamilton, the reigning World Champion.
